About Lincoln Square Theatre

Welcome to the Lincoln Square Theatre—an iconic entertainment venue in the heart of Decatur, Illinois. Established in 1916, the Lincoln Square Theatre has stood as a testament to timeless architecture, rich cultural heritage, and the enduring power of live entertainment.

A Historic Landmark of Art and Architecture

Designed by the distinguished local architectural firm of Aschauer and Waggoner, the theatre was built in the captivating Art Nouveau and Beaux Arts styles. These design elements gave the Lincoln Square Theatre an ornate, opera-house feel, making it a jewel in Decatur’s architectural crown. When the curtains rose for the first time on October 31, 1916, the audience was treated to George M. Cohan’s “Hit-the-Trail-Holliday,” a lively stage farce that set the tone for the decades of performances to come.

A Stage for Legends

In its prime, the Lincoln Square Theatre could accommodate nearly 1,400 guests, offering a wide range of entertainment—from live theatre and concerts to vaudeville, opera, and silent films. Its stage became a platform for some of the greatest performers of the early 20th century, including Harry Houdini, Harry Blackstone, Ethel Barrymore, and Bob Hope. The theatre’s distinctive Barton theatre organ, equipped with two 3-manual consoles, added a dramatic flair to silent film presentations.

Built to Last

Safety and durability were central to its construction. Crafted from steel, concrete, and fireproof brick, the Lincoln Square Theatre was heralded as a “fireproof theatre” of its time. Its grandeur was matched by its practicality, with a large stage flanked by ornate columns topped with lighted bowls held by seahorse sculptures, a mezzanine with elegant box seating, and a spacious third balcony.

Challenges and Resilience

In March 1960, a fire caused significant damage to the theatre’s lobby, resulting in a simplified reconstruction. Despite this setback, the theatre’s spirit remained intact. For many years, it was operated under lease by the Kerasotes movie theatre chain of Springfield, Illinois, serving as a beloved movie house and community hub.

Ongoing Restoration and a Bright Future

Since the early 1990s, the Lincoln Square Theatre has been undergoing a meticulous restoration process, working to return its original splendor while maintaining its historic integrity. Restoration efforts have included structural repairs, aesthetic restorations, and the reintroduction of original design elements. Though the theatre faced a temporary closure in May 2017, it triumphantly reopened in 2022 as a vibrant concert and live event venue.

Today, the Lincoln Square Theatre continues to be a beacon for the arts in Decatur, drawing in audiences for concerts, live performances, community events, and more. With its ongoing commitment to preserving history and celebrating culture, the Lincoln Square Theatre invites you to be part of its next chapter.
